Because today is Labor Day, I felt I would write something about my dad and his work. After retiring from 30 years of service in the Army and Air Force, my dad went to work for his brother, Bernard McCauley, on a mink farm in Graham, Washington. We lived in a SMALL trailer on the property until our house was ready for us. In spite of the fact that mink can STINK and they are mean little creatures, we loved our house that was in front of the mink sheds. (I finally had an attic bedroom that I always wanted!).
After a few months there was some kind of disagreement between my dad and Bernard so my dad left his work at the mink farm--which meant we had to leave our beloved house. Yet, we found another house in Graham that was only about a mile away which meant I could go to the same school and attend the same church. Plus, this house had an attic bedroom, too! My parents rented that cute, little red house for $50 a month from Mabel and Art Crate for years.
My dad left the mink farm without having another job, but he soon found the ideal job for him. He started working at the pro shop at the McCord Air Force Base golf course. He not only enjoyed the interaction he had with people who came to the pro shop, but he also played a round or two of golf while he was there.

Only One Time
I can remember only one time that my dad spanked me. I'm not sure how hold I was--maybe about 11 or 12, and I had talked back to my mother. Dad took a belt to me. The first time he hit me, it didn't hurt, and I made the terrible mistake of laughing. This made my dad mad, and he hit me again...and this time it did hurt! I learned to never cross that line again.

The Love of a Father
When I left on my LDS mission to Ecuador in October 1975 my dad wasn't feeling well, but we just thought it was something like the flu. Because he didn't seem to be getting better, the doctors continued to do some testing. In April I was called from Quevedo to the mission home in Quito and was told that my father had cancer, and they were only giving him 6 months to live. I was devastated. My mission president, President Heward, said that the area president had discussed my situation and felt that I should stay in the mission field. Needless to say, I spent a sleepless night--crying and praying and praying and crying. How was I going to tell my father that I wasn't coming home? He was not even LDS. How would he ever understand? Before I could call him the next morning, my dad called me. He told me that I needed to stay right where I was. I am writing this account 39 years later, and I am crying as I write this because of the great love and sacrifice of my father. He did die, as the doctors predicted, in October 1976. I anxiously wait for the day I can see him again!

I've Been Working On The Railroad
It was actually this song that Uncle Joe taught me--although he may have taught me Oh Susannah, too. :)
First Songs
One of the first songs I ever learned and memorized was Oh, Susannah. It was Uncle Joe (Anna Agatha Kennedy McCauley's son) who taught it to me.
The other song Uncle Joe taught me was Take Me Out to the Ball Game.

Conconully Memory
At Uncle Wayne and Aunt Margaret Dow's home at Conconully State Park, the kitchen table was at a large window that overlooked Conconully Lake--beautiful view. My dad--Daniel Henry McCauley--would sit at that table for hours and just look out of that window. My grandmother and I would sit at that table and play Canasta. Grandma Mac was the one who taught me to play Canasta so I was quite excited when I would win periodically. Uncle Jack was a wicked cribbage player, and I can remember playing cribbage with him (and my dad) numerous times at that table.

Grandma McCauley in Conconully
When I was a young child Grandma McCauley (Anna Agatha Kennedy) lived in Conconully, Washington for a time. I loved her old little house and had so much fun visiting her there. She had a garden, and I can remember helping her wash the produce from her garden. My dream was to marry Greg Ledgerwood (the Ledgerwoods were close friends of the McCauley family and related to Joe McCauley--Anna's son-- through Joe's first marriage) and live in that house when I grew up. That dream was shattered when the house was demolished before I grew up and I obviously, didn't marry Greg.

Irish Apple Cake
Yesterday I tried a new recipe--Irish Apple Cake. I divided it into four parts--delivering one part to 3 different people and keeping one part for us to eat. For those I delivered, I put the piece on what I call a "Family History Friendship Plate." The idea is for the person to pass on the plate to someone else with a treat from his/her heritage.
RECIPE
INGREDIENTS:
3 cups of flour
3/4 c white sugar
1/2 teaspoon of salt
3 egg yolks
1 c butter, softened
1 lemon, zest grated
1 3/4 c applesauce
1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves
DIRECTIONS:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees
- Grease a 9x9 inch baking pan
- Mix flour, sugar, and salt together in a bowl
- Beat in egg yolks, butter, and lemon zest until dough is thoroughly mixed
- Mix applesauce, cinnamon, and cloves together in a small bowl
- Press half the dough into the prepared baking pan; spread applesauce mixture over dough in a layer. Top with remaining dough.
- Bake in the preheated oven until cake is browned, 40-45 minutes

The top document is from NationalArchives.gov.uk
I forgot to document where the 2nd piece of information came from but I will find it when I have more time!! I am 98.5% this is our Martin Madden!! I am going to search for more information on the 5th Foot Regiment, and for records from Royal Hospital Chelsea and see what I can find too!

Holy Name of Mary Cemetery in Marysville, Ontario
I happened to run across this today when looking for something else. It contains all kinds of great info.
Ancestry.com Message Board: Holy Name of Mary Cemetery in Marysville,
Ontario
I
was wondering if someone could look up and maybe even take a digital picture of
my great-grandmothers grave site at the Holy Name of Mary Cemetery in
Marysville, Ontario. Her name is Mary Ann (McCauley) O'Leary.
Her year of birth was 1855 and her year of death was 1907. Nine years later her husband, John O'Leary moved down to San Antonio, Texas, USA to be taken care of by his daughter Catherine Agnes (O'Leary) Cunningham.
So I don't have any family remaining in Canada that I know of.
I will reciprocate with any lookups in this area including digital pictures.
Thanks,
Fred Dunn

Here is a link to a family tree site containing the
Kennedy/Madden family. One branch is that of Anna (Kennedy) McCauley who
married John Joseph McCauley from Marysville, Ont. His father was Bernard
McCauley from Leed, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi: Did you ever get your photo? If
not on the next sunny weekend, I will look for you. I just live a few minutes
away. It appears we may be connected, although not related. According to the
Marysville family tree book, Mary Ann McCauley who married John O'Leary was a
sister of Jim McCauley who married my great grandmother's sister, Cecilia
Jordan. There are a lot of McCauley's still in the area.
Good luck with your continuing search.

On
the McCauley's, it seems like they were very prevalent and had MANY children. I
received an email from a McCauley in Washington State about 8-9 years ago and
she sent me a very detailed tree of the McCauleys. Fred Dunn
Hi Fred: Well, I'm sorry to say I
could not find the stone today. A great many of the stones are in terrible
shape, and I could not read them. I did, however, find the parents' stone,
Bernard and Catherine, and have attached a picture. I think it says: In memory
of/Bernard McCauley/Died/July 11 1883/aged/67 yrs/native Parish of Lady (?) Co.
Antrim, Ireland/...soul resting.../Catherine/Cassidy/his wife/1823-1900.
The Chair of the Cemetery Board, Jim Kennelly, may be able to help more. I'm sure he could also put you in touch with the current McCauleys in the area.
Do you have a copy of the Marysville parish family history book, from 1987? If not, I can scan and forward to you. It also contains some interesting family info.
Good luck with your search.
